What to do for a dog that seems to have broken leg/paw/ankle?
Question by Oliver Troy: What to do for a dog that seems to have broken leg/paw/ankle?
My large dog was running into the house and seemed to twist/break her ankle/paw/leg. She sort of whiped out on the on the ground and hasn’t been able to put weight on her left leg since.
It seems kind of crooked, and she can’t lay it straight. She has been crying in pain but looks pretty comfortable when she lays down on her side.
Taking her to a vet isn’t an option for me right now since she weighs probably +150 pounds AND I don’t have transportation to get her there.
Any suggestions on a sort of “home remedy” or should I wait it out and see if it gets better for her?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I like finding home remedies for everything. I enjoy making my own cleaning products, solving problems and improving things through natural home remedies. I review home remedies as I find them and the Top Home Remedy List changes often as more reviews are added!
If you have a home remedy tip - share it!

Wonderful. Another irresponsible owner. Bet if YOUR leg was broken, you could find transportation to get someplace!!!
*YEAH…if erin f is a VET, than I am the King of England!!!!
Nope, you need to find a way and the money to get to the vet. Owning a pet is a responsibility and with that comes a financial commitment, sometimes unexpected, but your dog needs you to ensure proper medical care is given.
The ONLY thing to do is to get her to a Vet.
Look for a mobile Vet, call a friend.
TAKE IT TO THE VET!!!!
Ask one of your friends if you can borrow their car to get her to the vet! If she’s in pain, she probably isn’t happy. She needs mediacal attention. ( Sorry if I was snappy)
Call a vet to make a house call, or call a cab, a friend, somebody to go to emergency right now!
If taking her to a vet is not an option then your only choice is to shoot her!
Realistically, if you can’t properly care for a dog – you shouldn’t have one. She’s crying in pain and you won’t take her to the vet?????? What’s wrong with you??? Run to your neighbors house, pound on their door, beg for help – YOUR DOG IS CRYING IN PAIN – DO SOMETHING – NOW!!!!!!
Sorry pal. This should be treated by vets. If you love your dog, you will do anything to take her to the vet. I’m sure you don’t want her to suffer.
Well, you’ve been told about 20 times by now what you should do, take her to the vet… in the meantime, get her in a crate or small room where her movement is very limited until you can get her for some xrays, she’s dislocated it and needs care.
call me im a mobile vet (405)8802930 and ask for erin frank
call the vet and ask if they make house calls. Tell them it is an emergency and your dog is in a lot of pain. Explain that you can’t get her to the vet. I am sure you could find a vet willing to help you out.
If it where you what would you do . Have you ever had a broken bone they are extremely painful . Find a way to get her to the vet . Ask a neighbor to drive or call a pet friendly taxi . Just do it !!
HOME REMEDY!!!!???? What the fck? Are you kidding? VET NOW. OR BREAK YOUR WRIST AND SEE WHAT WORKS BEST FOR YOU! MY GOD, HOW COULD YOU EVEN CONSIDER NOT GETTING TREATMENT FOR YOUR DOG? THESE ARE NOT THE OLDEN DAYS, AND YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW TO SET AND REPAIR A FRACTURE. IT CAN HEAL DEFORMED AND YOUR DOG CAN NEVER WALK AGAIN, NOT TO MENTION THE EXTREME PAIN! IF YOU CANNOT AFFORD A VET TAKE THE DOG TO A SHELTER AND THEY WILL TREAT IT. MY GOD WHAT YOU ARE SUGGESTING IS BEYOND HEARTLESS. SHAME.
Why is it when it come to dogs it’s ok to let them suffer in PAIN.
Get the dog to the vets and make a payment plan with your vet. Anything other than that is animal curlity!
Call the vest at once, they sometimes have mobile units and will respond, that is very serious if she has broken a leg. There are no “home remedies”.
Ask a freind , family member, neighbour or even a stanger to give you a ride to the vet. I would drive you if I was approached with a dog in need of vet assistance.
This is not something a home remedy can help – she needs to see a professional. If you don’t have transportation, call the vet, explain the situation. In some areas, vets will make house calls when necessary.
If you suspect that your pet has a broken leg, approach him carefully. Many dogs that have no history of aggression may bite when they are in pain. Take him immediately to your veterinarian or local emergency clinic.
HERE IS WHAT TO DO!!!
With dogs, as with human beings, all bones are subject to breakage, but leg fractures are by far the most common. It is important to remember that dogs have a high pain tolerance and often a dangling leg seems to cause no pain. Therefore, don’t be afraid to handle the fractured limb (but be gentle!). The dog will let you know if it hurts.
Some signs to look for include a leg that looks misshapen, hangs limply, cannot support body weight, and is swollen. Also watch out for signs of shock, which include pale or white gums, a rapid heartbeat, or rapid breathing.
To provide proper care for your dog’s broken bone, use the following tips.

Step 2
Step 1: Restrain the dog if necessary.
Step 1a: Approach the dog slowly, speaking in a reassuring tone of voice.
Step 1b: Slip a leash around the dog’s neck, then place the leash around a fixed object. Pull the dog against this object and tie the leash so the dog cannot move its head.
Step 1c: Muzzle the dog to protect yourself.
Step 2: Examine the leg and determine if the fracture is open (wound near the break or bone protruding from the skin) or closed (no break in the skin).

Step 3c
Step 3: If the fracture is closed, proceed to Step 4. If the fracture is open:
Step 3a: Flush the wound thoroughly with clean water.
Step 3b: Cover the wound with a sterile bandage, clean cloth, or sanitary napkin.
Step 3c: DO NOT attempt to splint the fracture. Hold a large folded towel under the unsplinted limb and transport the dog immediately to the veterinarian.
Step 4: If the broken limb is grossly misshapen or the dog appears to be in great pain when you attempt to splint, stop and proceed to Step 5. Otherwise, proceed to splint the bone.
Step 4a: Use any splint material available — sticks, newspaper, magazine, or stiff cardboard. The object is to immobilize the limb not reset it.

Step 4b
Step 4b: Attach the splints to the fractured leg with torn strips of cloth or gauze.
Step 4c: Tape or tie the strips firmly but not so tightly that circulation may be impaired.
Step 4d: Transport the dog immediately to the veterinarian.
Step 5: If the broken limb is grossly misshapen or the dog appears to be in great pain when you attempt to splint, hold a large towel under the unsplinted limb for support and transport the dog immediately to the veterinarian.

You MUST take her to the vet! If it is broken and isn’t set properly she could end up loosing that leg! You need to call around and find someone to help you get her to the vet! Not taking her is neglect!
dear friend, if it isnt too much to ask, what the heck are you doing with a dog? (especialy a 150 pound one) if you cant provide for one, then you shouldnt have one.
step back and take a look at the situation. your dog appears to have a broken leg, and you ask people on the internet for a ‘home remedy’. what the heck are you thinking?
if you choose the home remedy route, then your dog will be a cripple for the rest of its life. there is no proper way, unless you are a vet, for you to set the bone and let it heal properly at home.
think about this a little bit. if you had a broken leg, what would you do? i am sure you have a friend that would take you to a doctor if you dont own a car. i am also sure that same friend would be willing to help you up of the floor. make the same effort for your dog.
as i said before, if you are not willing to make the expense for your dog, and are not willing to make an effort to help her then you should not have her. animals are not disposable and you cant just go through them like pairs of shoes. you should never think about an animal as ‘just a possetion’ because they are not. they are your friends and loyal companions. they deserve the same love and attention as a human family member.
hope this helps.
What kind of home remedy are you looking for? Cause when that bone sets in the wrong position, you are going to end up spending far more in the future. When you do not provide proper vet care for your pet, you are in jeopardy of being charged with abuse and neglect. When you take on a pet, you are responsible for their care, that means no matter what.. you are supposed to take them to the vet and take care of their needs. You are not doing that.
There is no home remedy unless you are a trained medical person. However, for right now I would try to ice the injured area as much as she will allow, off and on, to reduce swelling of area/reduce pain. That is standard for a fresh injury. Do not attempt to move her around or straighten the leg. You can lightly touch around the area to see what you feel. I would not attempt to wrap/tape/splint as you could make much worse.
Now, she should not be in life or death situation and you have time to call and find anyone to help you transport her to a vet. She should be ok until morning if that helps. Now if she just pulled a tendon, sprained then the ice and rest may show real improvement by morning. If there is chance of an actual break in bone you may be able to feel that. She would not be improved by morning. Irregardless, she still must see a vet tomorrow.
Keep her quiet, food/water near by and near your bed in case she has problems during the night. And to move her safer try placing her on a heavy blanket rolled up a bit. Scoot the blanket up under her. Then you can pull her on the blanket, lots easier as she is a big girl. Also can use the blanket to get her into car if don;t have a couple of big guys to help.
Sure – use the SAME home remedy you would use on your own broken leg. Let’s see, hope that the bone isn’t compressing a major artery – that would lead to atrophy and then eventual necropsy of the tissure which means leg amputation – and yep, you can do that yourself too. See, treat your dog like you would treat yourself. If you would lie around the house and self-nuture your own broken leg, then what can I say. But something tells me that you wouldn’t do that.
Something tells me that you would get to the doctor.
Do the same thing for your dog.

There isn’t one. The least you can do is call the vet for help.
