Controlling the grubs is the best way to control the Japanese Beetle, but unfortunately controlling them only in your yard won’t help much. The beetles will come from other areas. Especially if you live in the country like I do and are surrounded by soybean fields. The traps work as well, but its like dipping a cup full of water from a swimming pool, its not going to help much. There is a product called Milky Spores which is a bacteria that will control the grubs of the Japanese beetle in your yard, It is safe and will not harm desirable insects, if you decide to go that route. The most effective way of protecting your trees is to spray thoroughly with a recommended pesticide. I know, I don’t like to use them myself, but it is really the only way to significantly control the Japanese Beetles on your trees. If they continue to defoliate your tree year after year the tree will eventually die,

I don’t know how to stop John, Ringo, George, and Paul from speaking foreign language, but for BEETLES you just go to Home Depot and buy the “traps” that look like plastic bags hanging on a little metal pole. WORKS GREAT.

I have grubs in my yard, which are larvae of beetles, and destroy everything – grass, trees, flowers, etc by eating the roots. Using nemotodes, which are a small worm, is a cost efficient and non-chemical way to rid yourself of them. Sprinkle these on your lawn and water vigorously. Another thing you can do is go to a local greenhouse and buy a chemical repellant to spray on your plants. Also, take a soil sample in to your local home improvement store or university and have it tested. This is usually free. They can tell you what is in your substrate that is attracting these pests, so you can better tackle the situation. Good luck!!
