Is there any kind of “home remedy” anesthesia you can use to put a dog to sleep?

Question by Tarrisa: Is there any kind of “home remedy” anesthesia you can use to put a dog to sleep?
She is dying from cancer and the vet wants 0 up front to put her down, not including tests and such. I won’t have money for a little while and just want my dog not to suffer any longer. I don’t own a gun and wringing her neck just isn’t an option, yet. Ive given her pain medicine and its really not doing anything for her. Can anyone give some suggestions please? Shes 13 years old and I love her dearly. Help please!

NO _ the vet needs to do it – ask about paying off over time. Or contact a local shelter for help.

sheesh I really hope this is a fake question…………

Call your local shelter or humane society. Maybe they can help.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I know your pain.

  2. clarewhite76 says:

I can’t believe you’ve considered wringing her neck or shooting her!! I know you don’t want her to suffer but …. like the other person said try to come to some arrangement with your vet, sooner rather than later, before you resort to inhumane methods.

  3. Jaden R says:

OMG! Your dog has been a faithful companion to you for 13 YEARS and you can’t spare $150 to put her down!

Tell the vet you don’t want tests, just the injection. Also, call a couple of other local vets. The price may vary dramatically between offices. See how much you will have to pay for the office visit so you can factor that into the cost, too.

But please have get her this injection! She deserves it, right? You don’t want to see her suffer. If you seriously can’t afford even $150 for your dog to have peace, sell something! I don’t know anybody who doesn’t have $150 worth of junk they could stand to get rid of.

Take care of your dog! It’s what SHE would do for you!

  4. dmg1969 says:

No. The only humane thing to do is to have the vet euthanize her. If she is truly suffering, there is NO reason for the vet to do any testing.

Try to borrow the money from someone or ask the vet to work out some sort of payment plan. You OWE IT to your dog not to try it at home. All you will end up doing is causing your dog much more pain and suffering than it would experience at the vet. The vet knows how to do it painlessly.

  5. Harry P says:

i no it’s hard but deal with it. you have to comfort your dog with as much love you can. you just have to wait for money

  6. Brittany M says:

i cant believe you said that …yet!!! even shooting is horrible.

im sorry for your poor poor dog, the vet is the only way, its the kindest way, they just go to sleep.

i think calling your local shelter would be a good option, see if they would put her to sleep for less money

    i hope this helped

  7. Les 28 says:

how do you know she is suffering? is she in pain as you didnt say, no do not wring her neck i cant even believe you would of thought of saying that not if you love this dog as you say as do you honestly think this will be painless cause it wont be,if you really care about this animal and cant afford help her in the best way take her to your nearst shelter as i dont think your in your right mind to be having this dog and im going to worry now that your kill her your self and make her suffer more do the right thing and hand her over now!!!! as its seems to me you would rather do it your self than pay for it you really sound selfish to me and i cant see that you love this dog as much as you think get help fast!!for your dogs sake please.

Shame on you for being such a PRICK!!

    IDIOT!!!

  9. INDI says:

The vet will do it for you straight away, if you can pay for it later its not a problem.

  10. Bossoli says:

Come up with the money. She shouldn’t die at the hands of someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing.

    I’m so sorry.

  11. no way….shooting her????????!!!!!!!!!! that is out of question……its only $150 i’m sure you can make that money part time or borrow I/m only in middle school but even i could make that money[which i already have]….srry u have been with her 4 13 years which the costs will end up with thousands of dollars t care for your dog but u can’t come up with $150!!! that is unbeleivable

  12. Andi S says:

c if the vet can give u something else for her. or try taking her to the humane society in ur area.

  13. LD says:

Sorry to hear this situation. I am not understanding something….if your vet knows she has cancer, then she knows she is suffering. Please ask to make payments, or call around to other vets in your area. I work for a veterinarian, and see cancer on a regular basis, so I do understand this horrific disease. I am sorry to say if your vet is any kind of doctor, she would do the payments for you. There is no home remedy, & honestly, I don’t think you could live w/ yourself doing such a thing. Please get on the phone, and ASK! FYI-if she is really starting to suffer…it won’t be long. My heart goes out to you…just be there with her. So Sorry-LD

  14. Wow…. that actually did just make me vomit.

I am terribly sorry to hear about your dog. I had a dog pass away due to an inoperable tumor, he needed to be put to sleep.

However, I don’t understand how you can afford internet service, but you can’t afford $150 to do the *right* thing for your dog at the very end of her life.

I understand that times get tough, and money gets tight. But you’ve got to think about what is in your dog’s best interest here. Start making some calls to friends and family for help, and ask your vet for a payment plan. If the vet feels that it really is time for the dog to go, and that she is in pain, surely they can help you.

    Please do the right thing.

  15. cloudy says:

talk to your vet. a lady i use to work with had to put her dog down and her vet gave her what she needed so she and her husband could do it at home. they wanted her to be at home when it happened. i give them credit though because i couldn’t do it. if not, call your local shelter so she dosen’t have to suffer

  16. jodie says:

I can’t believe your vet won’t take payments. He he won’t take payments, there must be more to this. Shooting a pet is just outrageous. Wringing her neck is just unbelievable. Try to borrow money from friends. Friends should understand and want to help. I just don’t believe that you can’t come up with $150. I’m sure the vet would take whatever you could come up with and payments for the rest. Have you even ask the vet? You’re given her pain meds? Didn’t you have to pay for that?

  17. BUBBLES says:

I would talk to the vet about payment plans……….. find another vet if he won’t do it for payments or call a shelter and ask for help.

  18. twhrider says:

There’s no home way to do it. But, you say “not including tests and such”. Tell the vet you don’t want any testing done. If your dog is truly in as bad of shape as you say, there’s no need for testing. A quick injection, and she’ll be out of her pain. No real need to biopsy any masses for diagnostics if expense is an issue. There’s no real pressing need to know exactly what form of cancer she has, or you may already know. The other thing is, I know our local animal shelter will euthanize for a minimal fee. It used to be just a donation. Since the public can surrender a dog for any reason, I guess they figure offering the service for a donation is no different than the thousands of unadopted dogs they euthanize every year. Just call them up and see what your options are.

  19. if there are any such “remedies”, i’d never use them because they would most probably be unreliable, unsafe, and may even cause your dog more pain
and please please don’t shoot your dog
really the vet is the best option – safe and painless
maybe, like others have said, you can make an arrangement to pay off the money?
you could always go to another vet
i’m sorry for your loss and this must be a hard decision to make

  20. iadbpick6 says:

you need to call around to different vets…I have had to put down some dogs in my life and yet to this day have I had to pay a cent to do the right thing…The vet I see now only charges $35 to put a medium sized dog down and $55 for a large breed…But because I have been with this vet for yrs they dont charge me a thing to have that done….If you cant find a vet to do it at a low price then call your local animal shelter..I know they will uthanize her at a low cost..They also sell spay and nueter voucher for really cheap..They are there to help people who cant aford things like that..
Give her what she needs and dont let her suffer anymore..

  21. scarlett w says:

I agree with the first answer! Something in my gut tells me that this isn’t a true situation, and I hope I’m right! I’ve had some really hard times in my life, and you’d be surprised how many ways you can save money! I would do without things myself to see that my dogs had what they needed! They are totally at our mercy for everything and it’s our responsibility to see that they have what they need! Why would your vet want to do “tests” if it has been determined that your dog needs to be put down?? I also hope this is a fake question!!!!

  22. Gianna says:

When all is said and done, all you’ll have left are the memories of your beloved companion. At this stage, you must do what you’re able to live with….because you’ll have to live with what you’ve done.

Send your dog out with dignity and kindness. She deserves it and I think that’s where your heart is, too. Borrow the funds, if necessary. Talk to your vet about payment plans. Contact your local animal shelter and see what they say about doing the deed for you as far as, 1. Is it possible for them to do it, and, 2. What would be their fee, if any?

Don’t do something graphic and messy. You’ll hate yourself and if there’s a problem… everybody suffers. Yuk.

I am so sorry for your impending loss. I know it’s a difficult time for you and for the dog. Do the right thing. Your heart and soul will be the better for it. Trust me.

  23. As a last resort you could surrender her to the city animal shelter and they can euthanize her for free. But if you saw where they put dogs down you wouldn’t want to do that. Just bite the bullet and have the vet do it. Just charge the fee on the credit card and worry about it later. Think about what’s best for you sweet doggie.
