Help My Three Year Old Cat Is Constipated? What Home Remedy Can I Use To Help Her?

I just noticed that my three year old cat is constipated. I can see the poop hanging out from behind her. I first noticed when I saw her scoot her behind against the floor. What can I do at home because I really cant afford a huge vet bill?

You can go to the store and get some infant Glycerin suppositories and use one, then mix a little bit ( 1/4 teaspoon or so ) of Metamucil in wet food every other day if the problem continues. If she will eat cooked carrots, sweet potatoes or canned pumpkin ( plain, not pie filling) or Multi Grain Cheerios, those will help as well.Even a little milk should help her go.

    My vet suggested Mineral oil.
My cat that used to get constipated would take a few licks out of a spoon, or off of his foot. It worked pretty quick, usually a few hours. It doesn’t take very much, like 1/8 tsp.
If you need to, you can use a damp washcloth or bath to help move the stubborn stool.
Sometimes poop is just sticky, my cat that got constipated also has long hair, if I don’t brush him regularly he gets a lot of hair in his system and can get constipated. Just a bit of mineral oil (it is also in hairball treats) and consistent brushing takes care of him.
If this just happened today, she probably doesn’t need to go to the vet.

You might try some home remedys. Canned Pumpkin (not pie filling) mixed with his or her food. High fiber cat food is also important if cat is constipated. Also, encourage the cat to drink water. Have you been finding any poop in the kitty litter box.
If this does not get better you will need to take kitty to the vet. If the cat is impacted she may need an enema, the vet can do it. I hope this can be handled with the home remedies in your case. My 3 year old siamese has chronic constipation. When first diagnosed, she needed an enema. She is now on a high fiber diet and takes Lactulose everyday, which is a laxative prescribed by the vet.
Do no try to medicate the kitty without vet advice.

mineral oil! worry about that when you can, for now get her into warm water (but end first and formost) if it has been this way for a wile i bet her gut’s are full, soak her and if you have a shower head you can hold and spray, try and get as much as you can see out, use a clouth to help stimulate it after you get it warm, don’t worry about her getting icky, her insides are more important, you should do this about every two or three hours, more at first if you need to. if you have trouble getting her into the water, use the back of her neck skin, just like the kittens and it will make her a little more tollerable. hope it helps. p.s. if her hind end get’s engorged like a ball, and feels cold, it’s bring her to the vet or say your goodbyes. sorry.

You could buy a tube of hairball remedy. Hairball remedy usually has a taste that cats do not find offensive. My cats actually are standing eagerly awaiting their dose and will lick each others faces afterward. Hairball remedy is really a laxative that helps the cat ‘pass’ the hairball through the body.

You could try a small spoonful of canned pumpkin. Cats like it and it should loosen her up a bit. I heard this from a vet at the Fithcburg Animal Clinic. Unfortunately the vet left the office and they are now closed. Also make sure your cat is on a high fiber diet. The right diet makes all the difference.
