Help I think my dog has ear mites, I’ve been treating it with over the counter med from pet store but…?
Question by desperatemom: Help I think my dog has ear mites, I’ve been treating it with over the counter med from pet store but…?
it doesn’t seem to be getting better. The first day it seemed to help (4days ago i started treatment) but now it seems to be getting bad again. Is this normal? It’s only in 1 ear and I clean it out well and give him benedryl so he won’t scratch it but now the ear looks clean and the odor is lessened but it is very sore and he walks around w/his tilted to the side. I was wondering if anyone has any “home remedies” that might help.

It might not be ear mites. Ear infections and ear mites can be very similar to anyone not trained in this area. The over the counter meds for mites usually works pretty well, so if you’re dog is still having problems after 4 days of treatment, then I would definitely suspect an infection. You should take your dog to the vet and have it checked out. If it is an ear infection, antibiotics will be needed to clear it up.

See a vet…its worth it in the long run for the health of your dog.
It’s time for him to see a vet. Ear mites are rare in dogs and some of those over the counter ear mite meds can be harmful to the ear.
Could be an ear infection instead of mites, get it checked.
use erina products. They are very good for dogs.
your dog has a food allergy change his food to a lamb and rice or chicken and rice keep up with the bendryl until the symptoms go away most ear infections are caused by a food allergy…. ear mites do not cause the ear to drup that is an infection change his food and if it is not better or looking better in side of a week vet him …good luck oooh keep the q tip out. … sometimes they can eat the same food for yrs without a problem then they change …just like we do
Did you use a “q” tip? Is it possible that you pushed it too far in and hurt the ear… I like using a “q” tip but one has to be careful.. I wet my(moisten) mine with hydrogen peroxide and then swab it out. ALSO.. I get my pet medicine NOT at Walmart’s or pet stores.. I go to an animal feed store(no name because they have them all over the U.S. but individual businesses and NOT a chain) but it is a place that sells horse and cattle things such as bales of hay, bridles for horses, special medicines for horses and cows and medicines for cats and dogs.. that is the best place to get medicines for pets.. to include medicine for ear mites. Are you sure you have ear mites? Usually can tell if (by using a “q” tip, there is a black mushy stuff and it has an odor. that is the doo doo of the mites
If the dog has had this for a while.. then you would or should see a vet because it probably has an infection and would have to be treated with an antibiotic
Generally home remedies for mites won’t work. Get an ear rinse from your Vet. They usually are very cheap. Make sure to use it properly and treat both ears so that the infestation is completely eradicated.
Take him to the vet. Whether or not he has mites (much better to use a vet treatment than a pet shop one anyway), it sounds like he has an infection (especially given that you’ve said the ear was smelly).
It really needs to be properly cleaned and examined with an otoscope, and sounds like it also needs medicated ear drops (the vet will likely take swabs of his ears and look at them on the spot to get some idea of whether it is infected, and what organism is causing the infection.
I’m a little concerned by your mention of him tilting his head to the side…it could be just because he’s got a sore ear, but lots of things people use to clean dogs’ ears are ototoxic (dangerous to the ear), and if his eardrum is damaged (another reason to take him to the vet), these preparations can make their way into the middle and inner ear and cause vestibular disease (a head tilt is a sign of this…also look out for him seeming off balance).
Steer clear of the home remedies for this one…
The only way to know for sure if it is ear mites is to take to the vet and have them look in the ears with an oti-scope. Usually ear mites are a problem involving both ears, not just one. Sounds more like an ear infection or maybe ear ticks. Sounds to me like you just need to break down and consult the vet. If cost is a problem, just call the office and check prices! A good vet office will be professional and accommodating.
