Answer by Mr. Wizard
The dead sea contains approximately 31.5% salt. The water of the dead sea does not empty into another source, but only receives water from rivers. The water evaporates, leaving behind salt and other minerals, so the concentration is ever changing.
A good way to start this is to make a 100% salt solution, then dilute it. To make the 100% solution, put a pot of water on the stove, with any amount of water. You do not have to boil the water, but raise the temperature until it is quite warm.
Then slowly start adding salt, stirring to help it dissolve. When you notice the salt crystals no longer being dissolved and swirling in the pot, let it sit for a minute or so. If the salt dissolves, add more, if not, you are done. Allow the solution to cool, then pour it into another container, be sure not to pour in any residual salt crystals. You can use a coffee filter if that helps.
Now you can dilute the 100% salt solution to get your desired concentration. 1 part 100% solution to 2 parts distilled water, gives you a 33.3% concentration, which is very close to the concentration of the Dead Sea.
If you have a container measured in cc’s (or ml), then you could add 63cc’s of 100% solution, then add 137cc’s of distilled water or add water until you reach the 200cc mark. This will give you 31.5% salt solution. Then multiply that by the amount you need.
